If you're aiming to launch your academic path or enhance your professional skills, pursuing a research degree offers an enriching journey that will fuel your subject passion and help you achieve your full potential. Our research programs are available for full-time or part-time study, including practice-based PhDs and distance-learning PhD options. The School of Music's MA by Research program enables you to undertake extended independent study at the Masters level. This research approach features personalized one-on-one guidance, carefully designed to support your project's unique needs and research objectives. You'll produce a thesis of around 30,000 words on a topic you select.
Our work spans diverse scholarship and practice-based research bridging music, science, and technology. These interdisciplinary studies encompass music psychology, music's role in wellbeing, music education, music technology, instrument studies, sound research, and scientific/technological approaches to composition, performance, and musicology.
We're at the forefront of music psychology research. Our studies examine musical imagination, creative processes, taste formation, audience behaviors, developmental aspects, identity formation, and listening patterns. We investigate connections between music and wellbeing, conducting practical research on music's effects on physical and psychological health. Our team partners with varied institutions including Opera North, the Science Museum, and the National Health Service.
