Kent's anthropology program is celebrated for its vibrant postgraduate community and significant contributions to both new and established areas of anthropological study. With extensive regional knowledge and diverse thematic focuses, we provide guidance across social, biological, and visual anthropology. The PhD program spans three years full-time or five years part-time, during which students develop a thesis of up to 100,000 words with expert academic support. Candidates engage actively in the School's seminar culture and connect with leading researchers in key anthropological disciplines. The initial year focuses on research methods training, including ethnographic writing for social anthropology students, followed by fieldwork, library research, and thesis development. Typically, students collaborate closely with two supervisors while a three-member committee (including the primary supervisor) monitors their progress.
