Build a strong foundation in literary traditions while honing your skills as a writer, editor, and publisher through our distinctive project-focused curriculum. Develop your unique voice and learn how to amplify it in today's competitive literary landscape.

Kent's School of English is a vibrant, expansive, and forward-thinking department. Our faculty includes acclaimed poets and novelists, internationally recognized scholars, and cutting-edge digital innovators. You'll learn from diverse instructors employing varied teaching methods, exposing you to fresh texts, authors, and concepts throughout your studies.

Our program emphasizes hands-on projects. Beyond crafting poems, stories, literary essays, and research papers, you'll have chances to create documentaries, publish books, edit digital magazines, or develop other creative works as part of your degree.

To provide personalized guidance and mentorship, we maintain intimate class sizes and offer supplementary training through Summer Schools and Arts Festivals.

Our academic program
First year introduces core creative writing techniques like journaling, peer workshops, editing, and revision, alongside studies of major literary genres (poetry, drama, fiction), fundamental critical theories, and essential writing/research skills. Optional modules let you examine literature's treatment of pressing topics like environmental concerns, social power dynamics, technology's societal effects, or modern feminist thought.

Rather than traditional exams, your first year culminates in a summer term featuring intensive courses, practical workshops, and exhibitions where you can acquire professional skills, participate in School research internships, or sample literary areas beyond your core modules.

Second year delves deeper into fiction, poetry, and specialized writing forms while allowing you to select historical literary periods to study from medieval times to contemporary works. This year also involves planning your final year project, which could range from traditional theses and creative manuscripts to digital exhibitions, community initiatives, mobile applications, or other innovative formats. Summer programming provides extra support to perfect your project proposal.
