The English program at Hull fosters a welcoming, inclusive environment supported by world-class research that enhances our postgraduate supervision. Our faculty specialize in every literary era, spanning from Early Modern works to contemporary 21st-century literature. We boast distinguished strengths in medieval literature and medievalism, Shakespeare and Renaissance drama, early modern literary politics, 19th-century studies (with emphasis on novels and visual arts), modern and contemporary works (particularly poetry and fiction), genre fiction (including gothic, crime, and science fiction), and creative writing.
Postgraduate students can choose between two research pathways: an MRes in English (with Literature or Creative Writing specializations) or a PhD (in English or Creative Writing). You'll benefit from outstanding resources in the recently renovated Brynmor Jones Library and our Graduate School, with PhD candidates enjoying exclusive access to the library's Postgraduate Lounge. Our interdisciplinary research thrives through collaborative networks like the Andrew Marvell Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies. Alongside the University's Postgraduate Training Scheme, our department provides specialized instruction in research methodologies and subject-specific skills.
