A Master's by Research (MSc) program enables students to complete a one-year (full-time) research-focused degree with minimal structured coursework. This condensed format provides an opportunity to investigate an academic topic more quickly than through a comprehensive PhD program.
Unlike taught Master's degrees, Research Master's candidates select a specialized project and enjoy significantly more autonomy in their academic work.
Students collaborate with their supervisor during the initial months to establish an approved research plan. Throughout the project, participants can enhance their research capabilities by attending specialized training sessions and academic events.
The program culminates in submitting a concise thesis of approximately 25,000 words for evaluation.
Graduates who find the research experience rewarding may choose to pursue a full doctoral program (PhD) afterward.
Each student receives guidance from a primary supervisor, typically supported by a team of up to three advisors who provide project-specific expertise and mentorship.
