The University of Glasgow is home to the UK's sole academic department focused entirely on Scottish Literature studies.
This discipline plays a distinctive role at Glasgow, having operated as an independent academic field since the 1970s. As a comparatively young subject area, Scottish literary studies presents abundant research opportunities. Glasgow provides an ideal setting for groundbreaking postgraduate and postdoctoral research in this field. The university maintains excellent access to important Scottish archives through its Special Collections and Glasgow's Mitchell Library. Additionally, we collaborate closely with Edinburgh's National Library of Scotland and the Scottish Poetry Library, both housing extensive collections spanning all eras of Scottish writing. Over the past decade, our students have secured significant funding from organizations like the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Carnegie Trust. We also provide specialized bursaries for Scotland-focused research projects.
Our College of Arts Graduate School fosters a dynamic, interdisciplinary community for research students. We deliver comprehensive support through various training programs and skill development initiatives. The College nurtures a diverse student body across both taught and research programs within an intellectually rich environment. Every department within the college conducts pioneering research that shapes academic discourse globally.
