Our research operates at the intersection of organismal, functional, and systems biology. Our principal investigators have gained international recognition for their work in insect functional genomics, DNA-rearranging enzyme mechanisms and applications, translational genetics of myotonic dystrophy and similar unstable DNA disorders, and systems biology incorporating 'omics analysis and computational frameworks.
Our team possesses distinguished expertise and secured funding for research involving both human and model organisms like Drosophila melanogaster and microbes, along with 'omics technologies including genomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics. They employ interdisciplinary methods within the School of Molecular Biosciences, maintaining strong connections with Glasgow Polyomics and productive industry partnerships. Molecular genetics research aligns closely with key sectors such as agriculture and food security, health biosciences, and industrial biotechnology and bioenergy. Research themes complement ongoing School initiatives, with projects spanning fundamental science to translational applications in clinical research and sustainable agriculture. The molecular genetics program utilizes diverse approaches including molecular genetics (human, Drosophila, and microbial), biochemistry, molecular biology, systems biology, 'omics technologies (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics), bioinformatics, synthetic biology, and advanced cellular imaging techniques.
Our PhD program delivers exceptional training in state-of-the-art technologies with applications across academic and industrial career paths. Graduates frequently secure research positions in academia, industry, policy, and government sectors. We maintain robust international research collaborations, with College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences funding available for laboratory visits to conduct project components abroad. These opportunities significantly enhance our PhD students' professional networks while expanding their scientific knowledge and technical skills.
