Our Human Geography experts hold the top position in the UK for research publications and rank first nationally for world-class, internationally recognized research. (REF 2014)
HGRG research focuses on three core themes: Environmental and Community Stress, Spatial Politics and Practices, and Creative Geo-humanities. Together, our researchers examine power dynamics across various contexts, employing critical frameworks like feminism, postcolonial theory, posthumanism, post-structuralism, political economy, and historical analysis. This approach allows us to investigate pressing questions about modern geographical patterns and reconstruct understandings of past societies and environments. Our critical insights aim to inform policy discussions across urban development, alternative economics, and public health. Through partnerships with artists, musicians, and cultural institutions, we bring geographical research into public spaces, exhibitions, and debated landscapes.
Our interdisciplinary methodology combines world-renowned specialists in human/physical geography, Earth Sciences, and geospatial technologies. We maintain strong connections with political and arts organizations for collaborative projects and host numerous guest lectures with networking opportunities at open events. As part of our Graduate School, you'll receive exceptional support within an intellectually vibrant community designed to cultivate future global leaders who will shape culture, society, and economic systems.
