If you're passionate about literature, language, history, or cultural studies, our postgraduate program offers a nurturing space for academic exploration.
Our diverse curriculum and expert supervision span various disciplines aligned with faculty research specialties. Potential research areas include: contemporary and historical Celtic languages, literatures, and cultures, with particular focus on modern Scottish Gaelic and Irish linguistics, Scottish Gaelic literary works from the 18th to 21st centuries, Gaelic language studies, medieval Celtic texts (including early Irish and Middle Welsh), manuscript traditions of Celtic regions, Celtic artistic heritage, and Scottish toponymy. Our program fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, with strong connections to Archaeology, Scottish History, and English Language departments. As a key component of the Centre for Scottish and Celtic Studies, we actively cultivate an inclusive research community and contribute to the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
The Doctor of Philosophy degree recognizes original scholarly work that advances understanding in its field and typically includes publishable research contributions.

Our regular standard of admission is at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree (2:1), although candidates will usually also have completed or be undertaking a Masters qualification.
