Considering a career in teaching to make an impact? This postgraduate-level Master's qualification serves as your initial milestone. By completing the postgraduate diploma in education (PGDE) at the University of Glasgow, you'll qualify for the General Teaching Council for Scotland's Standard for Provisional Registration.
Whether you're from Scotland, other UK regions, the Republic of Ireland, or certain EU categories, this makes you eligible for the Teacher Induction Scheme (TIS). The TIS ensures a one-year teaching position to help you attain GTCS Standard for Full Registration, while also offering access to the GTCS Flexible Route. The PGDE Secondary program enables graduates meeting Scotland's teaching requirements to achieve GTCS Standard for Provisional Registration. The School of Education's curriculum blends 18 weeks of campus-based instruction with 18 weeks of practical school experience, fostering your growth as a thoughtful, proactive educator. You'll develop sensitivity toward students' needs, adaptability to evolving educational systems, and dedication to evidence-based professional development throughout your career. Every component of our PGDE program—whether academic or field-based—adopts a research-driven methodology, meeting both GTCS Provisional Registration standards and the University of Glasgow's graduate expectations.
The program champions values aligned with education's broader societal role, emphasizing social justice through research-led teaching. It challenges participants to reflect on their principles, preparing them to become equitable, inclusive educators in contemporary Scotland's diverse classrooms.
