This program provides an in-depth scholarly examination of one of today's most significant global challenges: balancing individual human rights within an international relations framework where state sovereignty has historically dominated. Ideal for those pursuing careers with NGOs, governmental bodies at national or international levels, academic institutions, or anyone seeking deeper understanding of human rights and global politics, this curriculum is tailored for you. Participants will enjoy a unique five-day Geneva study tour, visiting UN agencies and human rights NGOs.
Unlike conventional human rights programs that concentrate solely on legal aspects, this interdisciplinary degree integrates both legal and political viewpoints, allowing students to emphasize either field. The curriculum leverages distinguished scholarship across multiple disciplines including international institutions, security studies, gender studies, political philosophy, rights theories, and ethical frameworks, complemented by extensive regional expertise.
Students gain privileged access to university-affiliated and external organizations such as the Glasgow Human Rights Network, Glasgow Refugee, Asylum & Migration Network, Glasgow Centre for International Development, and the yearly International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival. For those interested in pairing this subject with advanced research methodology training, the affiliated MRes in Human Rights & International Politics is recommended. Graduates pursue careers in academia, government/foreign service, intergovernmental agencies, NGOs, and policy research institutions.
