Heart disease is expected to continue as the primary cause of mortality for the next 20 years, responsible for significant disability and diminished quality of life, making research crucial for improving diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
Our expertise lies in discovering and developing innovative treatment approaches that can progress to clinical testing. The School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health is a dynamic research institution offering exceptional training and educational prospects. Our specially designed British Heart Foundation (BHF) Cardiovascular Research Center features cutting-edge labs and equipment, positioning us as one of just six BHF Centers of Excellence nationwide.
We've consolidated our research capabilities into comprehensive, well-funded programs that leverage the strengths of both clinical and non-clinical lead researchers. Specializing in fundamental, translational, and clinical studies, we excel at uncovering cardiovascular disease mechanisms, detecting disease markers, pinpointing treatment targets, and creating innovative therapies for clinical evaluation.
Research initiatives are customized based on the specialized knowledge of our lead scientists. Opportunities exist for both laboratory-based and patient-oriented studies. Our methodologies span diverse techniques, encompassing molecular biology, biochemistry, population health studies, computational modeling, genetic analysis, cellular research (featuring sophisticated imaging technologies), immune system studies, and multi-omics approaches (including genome, protein, and metabolic profiling).
