The Masters program specializes in budget-conscious and avant-garde filmmaking and media arts. It aims to equip students with both practical abilities and analytical perspectives crucial for contemporary and evolving screen-based creation. In an era where emerging technologies constantly reshape how film and new media art are produced and shared, cultivating adaptable expertise has become increasingly vital for experimental filmmakers, moving image artists, and media practitioners. This course bridges the practical and theoretical aspects of film, moving image, and digital media arts, fostering an environment for creative exploration while enhancing technical proficiency and artistic development. Ideal candidates include experimental filmmakers, media creators, digital artists, and those engaged in both the theory and practice of visual media arts. Under the guidance of globally renowned academics and artists, participants will refine essential techniques and conceptual approaches to filmmaking and media arts. Glasgow provides a dynamic setting for cinematic and media arts creation, hosting significant cultural events like the Glasgow Film Festival and Glasgow International (a biennial contemporary art festival). Acknowledging the diverse backgrounds of creative students, we provide access to various software and hardware resources (including Adobe Creative Cloud, cameras, sound equipment, and lighting gear). Instruction takes place in Gilmorehill Halls, featuring a dedicated Media Lab, cinema facility, and a Media Archive housing over 6,000 items, supplementing the University Library's comprehensive collection of film, television, and media art literature. Gilmorehill Halls also serves as the base for the prestigious Screen journal and hosts its annual summer conference, drawing top scholars in film and television studies worldwide. Students can attend these conferences and interact with visiting academics throughout the academic year.
With an emphasis on practice-led research, the program creates pathways for those considering practice-based PhD studies or academic careers. It also prepares graduates for professional roles as media producers, particularly in independent and experimental productions. Participants will build a versatile skill portfolio, preparing them for freelance work in today's creative sectors. This forward-thinking curriculum combines artistic, technical, and research training, supporting graduates who aspire to work with media organizations or establish their own filmmaking/media arts ventures.
