Our Creative Writing Research programs offer distinctive and rigorous opportunities for established writers pursuing ambitious creative endeavors.
The newly introduced Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and Doctor of Fine Arts (DFA) degrees expand upon our longstanding tradition of providing graduate and doctoral pathways in Creative Writing studies.
These research programs combine hybrid instructional components (including literary seminars, practical workshops, and teaching methodology) within a guided research framework designed to nurture your creative and analytical projects. Both degrees provide focused, supported periods to develop significant creative outputs, offer chances to teach undergraduate writing courses, and allow applications for graduate teaching assistant roles in literature classes. The DFA program further enables extended scholarly investigation, resulting in a substantial critical essay or related academic work. Participants benefit from mentorship by acclaimed authors like Carolyn Jess-Cooke, Colin Herd, and Louise Welsh, alongside distinguished critics including John Coyle, Jane Goldman, and Helen Stoddart.
The University of Glasgow's Creative Writing program operates from the Edwin Morgan Writing Room, featuring specialized literary collections and media resources. We host an extensive calendar of guest lectures, masterclasses, and community events. The University Library's contemporary holdings and archival materials, including the Edwin Morgan Papers collection, serve as vital research assets. Our partnership with the Mitchell Library, among Europe's premier public libraries, enhances these resources. Weekly Creative Conversations throughout the academic term bring renowned visiting speakers to our campus.
