The 20th century brought profound transformations to Central and Eastern European nations, marked by conflict, upheaval, and sweeping societal shifts that created a turbulent era for the region. The fall of communist regimes and ensuing transitions have left lasting impacts, with many historical challenges persisting into modern times. Our exploration spans from the Baltic states to the Balkan peninsula and across Eurasia, examining pivotal developments in this strategically important zone. The University serves as the base for a government-supported Center of Excellence focusing on Russian, Central & East European Studies, organizing year-round cultural, academic, and social activities. While optional, students can choose to learn Hungarian, Czech, Polish, or Russian languages.
Glasgow University's Q-Step Center provides specialized programs to strengthen quantitative abilities - specifically, your capacity to work with data and interpret numerical information. Mastering these analytical techniques will significantly deepen your comprehension of critical topics within your academic discipline.
Within the School of Social and Political Sciences, Glasgow University's Q-Step Center delivers five degree programs incorporating quantitative methods training. These courses are designed to provide insightful perspectives on societal dynamics, teaching you to interpret statistical findings, effectively communicate your own analyses, and evaluate their real-world significance. These competencies prove invaluable both for assessing research data and for critically examining information from media and official sources. Approximately 25% of your coursework will focus on quantitative approaches, with opportunities for professional development through internships at prestigious organizations.
Recent expansions of the EU and NATO into Eastern Europe, coupled with evolving situations in Russia, Ukraine, other post-Soviet nations, and the Balkans, have generated significant need for regional experts. Alumni have pursued successful careers in international institutions like the European Commission, diplomatic services, non-governmental organizations, media, and corporate sectors.
