The 20th century brought profound transformations to Central and Eastern Europe, marked by conflict, political upheaval, and sweeping socioeconomic shifts that created a turbulent era for the region. The fall of communist regimes and subsequent transitions have left lasting challenges that persist in modern times. Our exploration spans from the Baltic states to the Balkan peninsula and across Eurasia, examining critical developments in this strategically important area. The University serves as the base for a government-supported Center of Excellence focusing on Russian, Central & East European Studies, organizing year-round academic, cultural, and social initiatives. While optional, students can choose to learn Hungarian, Czech, Polish, or Russian languages.
At the University of Glasgow's Q-Step Center, we provide specialized programs that strengthen quantitative competencies - the capacity to work with data and interpret numerical information. Mastering these analytical skills will significantly deepen your comprehension of core subjects within your academic discipline.
Our Q-Step Center features five degree options that incorporate quantitative training within Social and Political Sciences curricula. These programs are designed to foster meaningful engagement with societal analysis. You'll learn to interpret statistical findings, effectively communicate research results, and evaluate their real-world significance. These competencies are vital for assessing quantitative research in scholarly works, as well as for critically examining data in media reports and government publications. Approximately 25% of your coursework will focus on quantitative methodologies. Additionally, our programs provide internship opportunities with prestigious organizations to gain practical experience.
With the EU and NATO expansions in 2004 and 2007, coupled with ongoing geopolitical developments in Russia, Ukraine, other post-Soviet states, and the Balkans, professionals in this field are increasingly sought after. Our alumni have pursued successful careers in institutions like the European Commission, diplomatic services, non-governmental organizations, media, and corporate sectors.
