Our five-year BA in European Studies (including a foundation year) is designed to build your subject expertise while enhancing your academic abilities. The foundation year (Year Zero) provides comprehensive preparation in these key areas.
Upon successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to complete your degree with the School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies.
Europe dominates daily news cycles and newspaper headlines, highlighting its critical geopolitical significance for our global future. However, the complexities of modern Europe remain widely misunderstood.
Through European Studies, you'll examine Europe's economic, legal, and social frameworks alongside its historical roots, while appreciating its vibrant cultural heritage. Europe's artists, writers, musicians, and filmmakers continue to exert cultural influence that rivals America's global dominance.
Housed within our School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies, this interdisciplinary program explores Europe's multifaceted identity through humanities and social science perspectives. Our faculty brings expertise across modern languages, literature, film, art history, history, politics, and sociology. The five-year structure includes a fourth year abroad, allowing you to acquire a second language while experiencing European cultures firsthand.
