The 20th century saw profound transformations across Central and Eastern Europe, marked by conflict, political upheaval, and sweeping socioeconomic shifts that created a turbulent era for the region. While communism's fall initiated new developments, numerous historical challenges persist from the Baltic states to the Balkan peninsula and across Eurasia. Our institution serves as the base for a government-supported Center of Excellence focusing on Russian, Central & East European Studies, organizing year-round academic and cultural activities. While optional, students can choose to learn Hungarian, Czech, Polish, or Russian languages.
At the University of Glasgow's Q-Step Centre, we provide specialized programs to strengthen quantitative abilities—equipping students to interpret data and utilize statistical evidence effectively. Mastering these analytical skills deepens your comprehension of critical topics within your academic discipline.
Our Q-Step Centre delivers five interdisciplinary degree options that combine quantitative training with social and political sciences. These programs foster meaningful engagement with societal analysis, teaching students to evaluate statistical findings, present research effectively, and discuss real-world implications. These competencies prove invaluable for interpreting academic data as well as scrutinizing information from media and official sources. Approximately 25% of coursework focuses on quantitative methodologies, with opportunities for professional internships at leading organizations.
With EU and NATO expansions in 2004 and 2007, coupled with evolving situations in Russia, Ukraine, other post-Soviet nations, and the Balkans, expertise in this field remains highly sought-after. Alumni have pursued successful careers in EU institutions, diplomatic services, NGOs, media, and corporate sectors.
