Scottish literature explores poetry, drama, fiction, and prose from Scotland, spanning from the 14th century to modern works. The University features the UK's sole academic department focused entirely on teaching and researching Scottish literature. It houses the Centre for Robert Burns Studies, currently creating a comprehensive scholarly edition of Scotland's national poet's works. This program develops highly sought-after skills, particularly the critical and creative thinking abilities that distinguish arts and humanities graduates. Alumni have pursued careers in media, journalism, education, research, and heritage, securing positions at organizations like the BBC, The Herald, National Library of Scotland, major publishers, and television production firms.

Advanced entry
Applicants who achieve exceptional grades in their Advanced Highers, A-levels or International Baccalaureate may be considered for advanced entry, meaning that an Honours degree can be completed in three years instead of the normal four years, or four years for five-year integrated Masters programmes.
