Philosophy is the methodical pursuit of understanding through reasoned analysis of fundamental questions about existence, ethics, knowledge, and humanity. We organize student reading retreats, often set in the Scottish Highlands, alongside an active undergraduate Philosophy Society.
You'll cultivate versatile abilities that prove advantageous in professional life, including critical evaluation of arguments, textual interpretation, analytical thinking, clear written and verbal expression, and challenging conventional wisdom. Many alumni pursue advanced Philosophy degrees and academic careers. Recent Philosophy graduates have secured positions at Hydrogen Group (as recruitment specialists), Hopscotch Films (as television researchers), The Guardian (as audience engagement editors), and through the Civil Service fast-track program (in Treasury and Ministry of Defence roles).
This program examines essential philosophical concepts about reality's fundamental nature. Participants investigate key problems in formal logic, metaphysics, philosophy of religion, and philosophy of science, particularly addressing what constitutes true existence.
Upon completing your second year, you'll have engaged with philosophy's central disciplines while gaining practical skills to formulate your own responses to the foundational questions explored in years one and two.
