Latin focuses on mastering the Latin language, exploring its literature, and understanding Roman culture. As part of your studies, you'll have the chance to tour historical sites and museums in Italy. Your starting level depends on prior experience with Latin—beginners or those with some knowledge begin at level 1, while students with strong Higher or A-level results may start at level 2.
The curriculum builds a solid grasp of grammar and vocabulary, progressing to interpreting authentic Latin texts. You'll develop skills to read basic Latin works and translate them into English while expanding your linguistic knowledge to tackle more complex literary passages. The program includes analyzing diverse authors, examining literary and cultural contexts, and refining critical thinking through well-researched essays. Honors students can spend a minimum of three weeks (typically in the summer after year 3) exploring Italy's archaeological treasures, with financial aid available for Single Honours candidates.
Graduates have pursued careers in education, government, administration, library sciences, archival work, and museum curation in recent years.
