The program begins by analyzing historical transformations from medieval to contemporary periods through Scotland's unique perspective, then delves deeper into medieval Europe's complex relationships with surrounding regions. Students evaluate the factors influencing stability and transformation in political systems, social structures, economic models and cultural expressions throughout different eras. These classes blend traditional lectures with interactive small-group discussions. The curriculum progresses to investigate societal and cultural shifts during Europe's early modern and modern periods, followed by a comprehensive study of world history that tracks the movement of populations, ideologies and colonial powers across borders.
