German encompasses learning a major European language and its cultural heritage. At Glasgow, we offer diverse teaching approaches, covering everything from 18th-century traditions to modern cultural studies. You'll integrate language learning with cultural exploration through courses designed for real-world and professional applications, giving our graduates a competitive edge in the job market. Your first-year curriculum depends on prior German experience. Students with an SQA Higher or A-level (grade A or B) enroll in non-beginner language and culture classes, while beginners or those with limited experience can take intensive foundation courses covering German reading, writing, and speaking. Dual language students spend their third year abroad in a country speaking one of their chosen languages, followed by an additional three-month placement in their fourth year to immerse themselves in their second language's culture.
Language graduates pursue diverse career paths including: media, arts administration, education, civil service, finance, business management, public relations,
and diplomatic careers.
Employers highly appreciate the adaptable skills gained through language degrees. A Modern Languages & Cultures degree from our School provides fresh perspectives on global understanding.
