German encompasses learning a major European language and its cultural heritage. At Glasgow University, we offer diverse teaching approaches spanning from 18th-century studies to modern cultural studies. Our program integrates language acquisition with cultural understanding through practical, career-oriented courses, giving our graduates a competitive edge in the job market. Your first-year curriculum is determined by your prior German experience. Students with SQA Higher or A-level German (grades A or B) enroll in our level-1 intermediate language and culture classes. Beginners or those with minimal experience can opt for our intensive level-1 foundation course, developing essential reading, writing, and speaking skills. Dual language students complete their year abroad in a country speaking one of their chosen languages, followed by an additional three-month placement in their fourth year in a nation where their second language is spoken.
Language graduates pursue diverse career paths including: media industries, arts administration, education/teaching, civil service fast track programs, financial services, business management, public relations, and
international diplomacy.
Employers highly appreciate the adaptable skills gained through language degrees. Graduating from our School of Modern Languages & Cultures provides you with a unique global perspective.
