German encompasses learning a major European language and its cultural heritage. At Glasgow University, we offer diverse teaching approaches covering everything from 18th-century traditions to modern cultural studies. Our program integrates language acquisition with cultural understanding through practical, career-oriented courses, giving our graduates a competitive edge in the job market. Your first-year curriculum is determined by your prior German experience. Students with SQA Higher or A-level German (grades A or B) enroll in our level-1 intermediate language and culture classes. Beginners or those with minimal experience can join our intensive level-1 foundation course, which develops essential reading, writing, and speaking skills. Dual language students complete their year abroad in a country where one of their chosen languages is spoken, followed by an additional three-month placement in their fourth year to immerse themselves in their second language environment.
Language graduates pursue diverse career paths such as: media, arts administration, education, civil service fast-tracking, finance, business management, public relations
international diplomacy.
Employers highly prize the adaptable skills developed through language degrees. A Modern Languages & Cultures degree from our School provides transformative perspectives on global understanding.
