The Sociology and Social Policy program enables you to examine how social policy and public sociology drive societal transformation, investigating ways citizens can contribute to solving pressing social issues.
This combined Sociology and Social Policy curriculum has been offered at the University of Wolverhampton for several years. Starting in 2022, the program has been revamped with a fresh, dynamic perspective on societal structures, emphasizing transformative change. Modern communities confront urgent challenges including environmental crises, widening disparities in wealth and opportunity, and the psychological impacts of digital platforms. This interdisciplinary program prioritizes addressing these issues, along with examining welfare system reforms and food scarcity concerns. The course provides a framework to analyze both the origins of societal challenges and the effectiveness of policy interventions, encouraging critical assessment of why some initiatives succeed while others fall short. Recent global events like the pandemic and environmental emergencies, alongside activist campaigns such as climate protests and racial justice movements, demonstrate the power of civic engagement in spotlighting systemic issues. The relationship between government and citizens sometimes sparks meaningful reform, while other efforts face obstacles. Using varied real-world examples tailored to student and faculty interests, we'll evaluate the social determinants affecting population health, economic stability, and overall quality of life.
