German encompasses learning a major European language and its cultural heritage. At Glasgow University, we offer diverse teaching approaches spanning from 18th-century studies to modern cultural topics. Students integrate language acquisition with cultural understanding through courses designed for real-world applications, giving our graduates a competitive edge in the job market. First-year course placement depends on prior German knowledge - students with SQA Higher or A-level German (grades A/B) enroll in non-beginner language and culture classes, while beginners or those with limited experience can take intensive foundation courses covering essential reading, writing, and speaking skills. Dual language students complete their year abroad in a country speaking one of their chosen languages, followed by an additional three-month placement in their fourth year to immerse in their second language environment.
Language graduates pursue diverse career paths including: media industries, arts administration, education, civil service fast track programs, financial services, business management, public relations
international diplomacy.
Employers highly appreciate the adaptable skills developed through language degrees. A Modern Languages & Cultures degree from our School provides graduates with unique global perspectives.
