French encompasses learning a major European and global language along with the diverse cultures it has shaped worldwide. Your French studies allow you to explore various subjects such as French graphic novels, chanson française, travel literature, medieval French history, and modern France.
The School of Modern Languages & Cultures provides degree programs in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. You can pursue French, German, Italian, or Spanish as standalone single honors or combine them with other disciplines for a joint degree. Portuguese and Russian are exclusively offered as joint degrees, requiring pairing with another subject. Optional courses include Catalan, Mandarin Chinese, Czech, and Polish, which can be integrated into your program.
During your first year, you'll typically enroll in either Beginner-level courses (for those with no prior experience or only National 5/GCSE equivalent) or Non-Beginner classes (for students with recent Higher, A-level, or equivalent qualifications).
Language graduates pursue diverse career paths in fields like: media, arts administration, education, civil service fast stream, finance, business management, PR, and diplomatic services. Employers highly appreciate the adaptable skills gained through language degrees. A Modern Languages & Cultures degree from our school offers fresh perspectives on global affairs.
