This academic program explores cinema and television as powerful influences in contemporary culture, shaping both entertainment and education.
The curriculum serves as excellent preparation for diverse roles across media, arts, and cultural sectors. Recent alumni have secured positions including location coordinator for Scottish film productions, research roles at the British Film Institute, and internships with Park Circus film distribution.
Our established graduates have built successful careers with prominent organizations like BBC and STV, working as media professionals, journalists, arts administrators, and academic researchers.
The first two years establish foundational knowledge through theoretical, historical, and critical studies. During Honours years, students can blend required and elective courses for specialized learning, while examining how practical work deepens media comprehension. Core components include Screen Analysis and Screen Histories courses, which develop analytical skills for film/TV and examine their historical contexts.
Elective options may cover regional cinema (such as postwar Japanese film),
local media (like Scottish productions), genre studies (including animation and film noir), production techniques (from screenwriting to audio-visual critique), and thematic explorations (ranging from acting techniques to children's programming).
