This academic program explores cinema and television as powerful influences in contemporary culture, shaping both entertainment and education.
The curriculum serves as excellent preparation for diverse roles across media, arts, and cultural sectors. Recent alumni have secured positions including feature film location assistant in Scotland, researcher at the British Film Institute, and internships with Park Circus film distribution.
Our established graduates hold prominent positions in creative industries, working with major broadcasters like BBC and STV, as well as pursuing careers in arts administration, journalism, and media academia.
The first two years establish foundational theoretical, critical, and historical knowledge. During Honours years, students can blend core and elective courses for specialized study while examining how practical work deepens media comprehension. Required courses include Screen Analysis and Screen Histories, which develop analytical techniques and historical perspectives on film and television.
Elective options may cover specific eras and regions (such as post-war Japanese cinema or
Scottish film and television), genres (including animation, film noir, and melodrama), production theory and practice (like audiovisual criticism and screenwriting), and thematic studies (such as acting for screen or children's programming).
