Celtic Studies allows students to blend language learning with diverse courses exploring both medieval and contemporary Celtic cultures across the British Isles. You'll engage with Celtic-speaking communities' historical and modern traditions alongside leading scholars while mastering one of the region's Celtic languages.
The University maintains dynamic exchange programs with Trinity College Dublin and institutions in North America and Australia that specialize in Celtic studies. Alumni have pursued diverse paths including primary/secondary education, museum curation, heritage conservation, publishing, music, business ventures, and academic research.
Students who completed Celtic Civilisation coursework in their initial years can opt to learn Scottish Gaelic or pair medieval Celtic history with ancient Celtic language studies. The program offers specialized courses covering various cultural and literary aspects, from early Irish/Scottish Gaelic beliefs to modern language policies, folklore studies, medieval Welsh texts, and Celtic artistry. Honors students explore deeper historical themes like medieval Ireland, the Northern Britons, and Pictish civilization, culminating in an independent research dissertation on a self-selected Celtic-related topic.
