Archaeology explores how ancient civilizations engaged with their environment by examining artifacts, historical sites, and geographical contexts.
Students can acquire hands-on excavation experience both domestically and internationally. Previous
participants have joined digs throughout Europe and the Middle East, spanning locations like the Baltic region, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, and Portugal.
The curriculum strongly focuses on obtaining real-world heritage experience,
covering archaeological methods and promoting archaeology's societal value. Students
enjoy access to local and overnight excursions to dig sites, historical areas, museums, and other cultural institutions.
Participants may join ongoing faculty research initiatives involving site surveys, excavations, archival studies, and collection-based work, while also securing internships at heritage and museum partners through our professional network. We additionally assist students in joining European excavation teams.
Various industries, including finance, legal, corporate, and hospitality sectors, appreciate the adaptable competencies gained through archaeology studies, such as collaboration, hands-on troubleshooting, and analytical thinking.
Numerous alumni pursue careers in archaeology and heritage preservation with
public institutions, nonprofit organizations, and cultural agencies across Scotland and internationally,
such as the National Trust for Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland, Archaeology Scotland, the British Museum, National Museums of Scotland and Glasgow Life, alongside UK-based and international archaeological service firms like GUARD Archaeology Ltd.
