The Scots Law degree serves as the essential qualification for aspiring legal professionals in Scotland. It also acts as a strong foundation for those aiming to qualify in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and various global jurisdictions. The program combines rigorous academic study with flexible course options, making it an ideal launchpad for both legal and non-legal careers.
Joint Honours students can fulfill all requirements to progress toward the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice, the next step in Scottish legal training. Candidates must choose between the Scots Law LLB or Common Law LLB, as only one offer will be made. Those planning to practice in Scotland or pursue dual qualifications should select the Scots Law LLB, while Common Law applicants must justify their preference. Note that transfers between programs are prohibited under College of Social Science rules. The LLB program provides comprehensive legal training, available as a three-year Ordinary degree or four-year Honours program.
Aspiring Scottish solicitors or advocates must complete a postgraduate Diploma in Professional Legal Practice after their LLB, followed by two years of training for solicitors or up to 2.5 years for advocates. Scots Law graduates often join international firms and may practice in jurisdictions like England, the US, or Australia, though additional local law qualifications are required.
Glasgow's Law degree offers exceptional flexibility, focusing on employability skills while providing study abroad and placement opportunities. This makes the LLB valuable for diverse careers including government, journalism, business, international organizations, finance, and public services.
