Our physical geography research centers on two key groups investigating environmental transformations across different timeframes:
Cryosphere, Coastal and River Dynamics (CCoRD)
Landscape and Ecosystem Dynamics
Earning an MPhil or PhD requires conducting thorough research on a specific subject and producing original scholarly work. Students in these programs engage with pioneering research across the School's various investigative areas.
We encourage applications for MPhil/PhD programs in both human and physical geography, especially projects that align with and expand upon our current research group strengths.
The Geography department implements a structured evaluation process after the first year of postgraduate research. We offer comprehensive support throughout PhD studies, helping students maximize their capabilities and complete their degrees on schedule.
Students can anticipate:
Exceptional research guidance to foster academic growth
Customized supervision tailored to individual needs
Approachable supervisors committed to direct engagement with research students
Scheduled regular meetings with primary supervisors
An open-door policy providing immediate access to leading researchers
Frequent interactions with supervisory teams, research groups, and academic mentors
We serve as an accredited research training center for Physical Geography, offering NERC-approved instruction in methodologies, data gathering, and analysis techniques. Our program has consistently secured NERC-funded studentships, currently spanning three and a half years.
