Exeter's Drama department is a globally recognized hub for practice, research, and education, providing an inspiring and nurturing space for postgraduate studies that attracts international scholars.
Our approach combines creative practice, historical research, community-focused studies, ethnographic methods, and cross-disciplinary partnerships. We specialize in examining underrepresented voices in British theater, Asian performance traditions and diaspora expressions, along with cultural dimensions of modern issues like environmental challenges, public health, urban development, spatial dynamics, and rural life.
Our research spans diverse performance genres, from applying performance theory to daily cultural phenomena to evaluating mainstream and popular theatrical traditions. We're particularly known for our expertise in theater historiography, contemporary performance, and socially engaged community theater.
Our department fosters a collaborative environment where staff and graduate students uphold strong ethical principles while actively addressing colonial, patriarchal, class-based, and gendered power structures.
