Exeter's Drama department is a globally recognized hub for practice, research, and education, providing an inspiring and nurturing space for postgraduate studies that attracts students worldwide.
The MA by Research in Drama allows you to design your own research project. This qualification serves either as a terminal degree or as preparation for doctoral studies. Under faculty guidance, you'll produce an in-depth dissertation (up to 40,000 words) exploring your chosen topic while engaging with current disciplinary debates.
Our methodologies encompass creative practice, historical research, community-focused studies, ethnographic approaches, and cross-disciplinary partnerships. Special focus areas include examining inequalities in British theatre, Asian performance traditions and diaspora expressions, plus cultural dimensions of pressing issues like environmental challenges, public health, urban development, and rural spaces.
Our research spans diverse performance forms - from applying performance theory to daily cultural practices to investigating mainstream theatrical genres. We're particularly distinguished in theatre historiography, contemporary performance, and community-engaged theatre.
Our department fosters a collaborative environment where staff and postgraduates uphold strong ethical principles while confronting colonial, patriarchal, class-based, and gendered power structures.
