Leveraging the combined knowledge of faculty from Games and Arts alongside Games Technology and Mathematics, Abertay has established expertise in pioneering research that connects performance arts with video games. This interdisciplinary domain receives academic support from practitioner-researchers specializing in areas including game development, digital arts, theatrical design, audio production, and game/media analysis. Numerous faculty members bring professional games industry experience, while Performance and Play research additionally draws upon resources from our Emergent Technology Centre.
Investigations in Performance and Play may involve examining professional communities, experimental practice-based research using both digital and conventional media, integrating display technologies and extended reality (XR) applications into location-specific performances and artworks, plus audience behavior studies.
Abertay University serves as the principal institution for InGAME: Innovation for Games and Media Enterprise, an AHRC-supported research and development hub for Dundee's gaming sector. Graduate students gain access to R&D initiatives and networking opportunities with industry professionals. Dundee maintains one of Britain's most established and thriving games ecosystems, with the University fostering strong connections to local, national, and international game development studios.
