The University of Exeter offers a vibrant and welcoming academic environment for studying French, featuring an engaging curriculum shaped by world-class scholars. Our approach emphasizes comprehensive education with flexible options, enabling students to combine French with one or two other languages if desired. Within the BA Modern Languages: French program, you'll find diverse module choices spanning French cultural studies from medieval times to contemporary periods, encompassing literature, visual arts, cinema, linguistics, gender studies, and philosophy. Students can either explore a wide range of these disciplines or focus intensively on specific areas of interest.
During your third year, you'll immerse yourself in a Francophone setting through study at prestigious partner institutions like Rennes, Paris-Sorbonne, or Brussels, participate in British Council teaching placements, or gain professional experience through international work opportunities. Some work placements may qualify for financial support through the EU's Erasmus Work Placement program.
French studies are available through four distinct pathways:
Focus exclusively on French for a BA in French
Combine French with one or two additional languages (such as Chinese, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish) within our BA Modern Languages degree
Pair French with subjects like Arabic, Art History & Visual Culture, Classical Studies, English, Film Studies, History, International Relations, Latin, Politics, Philosophy, or Sociology through our Combined Honours Programs
Or create a personalized academic path with our Flexible Combined Honours program
