Our PhD Applied Physics research and supervision focuses on key areas: optical and semiconductor devices, semiconductor theory and experimentation, photonics, as well as designing and building ultrafast systems for Terahertz research and molecular THz spectroscopy. These interdisciplinary initiatives leverage the combined knowledge of our teams in electronic engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, and psychology.
As one of the UK's most well-equipped institutions, we operate with extensive networked computing resources, specialized software, and advanced testing instrumentation. Our research spans diverse fields—from semiconductor physics and computational theory to artificial intelligence, robotics, and gaming—with most groups utilizing state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. Annually securing multimillion-pound funding, we collaborate on EU programs and partner with governmental and industrial entities.
Joining our School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering allows both new graduates and professionals to develop or refine their technical expertise.
Alumni from our programs hold leadership roles across industries and academia. Notable employers include Electronic Data Systems, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Bank of Mexico, Visa International, Hyperknowledge (Cambridge), Hellenic Air Force, ICSS (Beijing), United Microelectronic Corporation (Taiwan), and our own University.
