The Centre for Advanced Instrumentation specializes in creating cutting-edge optical instruments for diverse scientific purposes. We maintain strong collaborations with the Astronomy and Astrophysics Section, the Biophysical Sciences Institute, and the Centre for Soft Matter. Our facilities are located within Durham's Physics Department and at the neighboring NetPark Research Institute.

Qualification Requirements

The standard minimum entry requirements for Postgraduate Research are an upper second class honours degree (2:1) from a UK university or an equivalent degree qualification from an overseas university. A Masters qualification is a requirement for entry on our PhD programme. Evidence of research skills and/or experience is useful. For international applicants whose first language isn’t English, we require a UKVI/IELTS score of 7 (with no component under 6.5). Applicants who have not reached this level, can be admitted to a 6-, 10- or 20-week pre-sessional English Language course, with the course length depending on your current UKVI/IELTS score (which must be over 6.0, with no component under 5.5). TOEFL iBT: 92 (no component under 23); 176 (minimum of 169 per component) in Cambridge Scale (CPE or CAE; Pearson Academic (PTE): 62 (with no less than 56 in each Communicative Skill).
