Our Human Rights Centre stands among the world's most established and prestigious institutions for interdisciplinary human rights education. By pursuing human rights studies at Essex, you'll join one of the globe's most extensive, diverse, and accomplished networks of human rights scholars, professionals, and students. Our interdisciplinary MA program in Human Rights Theory and Practice explores the historical foundations, conceptual evolution, and real-world application of human rights principles. The field of human rights presents not only practical challenges but also numerous unresolved theoretical and philosophical questions.
Alumni from our Human Rights Centre's MA programs pursue diverse career paths across government agencies, international organizations, and NGOs, while others continue their academic research.
Many graduates have secured positions with prominent institutions including the Council of Europe, United Nations, OSCE, Save the Children, Shelter, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the International Commission of Jurists.
We hold the distinction of being the first UK university to establish a formal partnership with the UNHCR, offering our postgraduate students unique internship and research opportunities rooted in our longstanding leadership in international humanitarian law.
