Our department provides a uniquely comparative perspective on literary studies. At Essex, you won't just examine English literature - you'll explore global literature written in English. You'll investigate literary works across different eras, regions, and styles, blending academic research with creative, hands-on approaches to textual analysis.
You'll tackle the complexities of researching Shakespeare and other early modern works while examining an exceptionally broad spectrum of writing. Your literary journey will span from African American works to Caribbean literature, and from the literary scenes of New York, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Moscow to London.
Our Department thrives as a dynamic hub of scholars and creative professionals dedicated to fostering individual artistic responses to literature. This special atmosphere stems from our diverse community of acclaimed authors, poets, playwrights, and distinguished literary experts.

A quality literature degree creates numerous opportunities, with our graduates pursuing careers as writers, academics, university professors, educators, publishing professionals, editors, reporters, arts coordinators, theater directors, drama consultants, and language interpreters.

We provide PhD, MPhil, and MA by Dissertation supervision across various literary traditions and critical approaches, encompassing most areas of early modern and contemporary English-language writing, along with several other languages.
