At Essex, we ground philosophy in real-world existential, social, and political challenges. We emphasize philosophy's connections to other fields—including politics, culture, law, medicine, and aesthetics—and apply this perspective to pressing public concerns, such as debates surrounding mental health laws or end-of-life care policies.
The four-year MPhil program (extended to five years with study abroad or placement) builds foundational philosophical knowledge and core disciplinary skills during your first three years. Your final year features advanced MA-level modules, enabling deeper exploration of specialized topics and culminating in a journal-style thesis. Our curriculum spans diverse subjects—from life's meaning to critiques of capitalism, from ancient thought to contemporary European philosophy—with particular expertise in:
Ethics, Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, and Modern European Philosophy (encompassing critical theory, phenomenology, and existentialism)
We recognize today's evolving job market demands graduates who can approach problems with logical, creative thinking and communicate effectively.
Essex is committed to fostering an academic environment where you'll develop both philosophical mastery and the professional skills needed for your future career.
