Our Social Policy PhD program provides a distinctive chance to conduct research across diverse social settings. Whether you're exploring how social policies are created and enacted, investigating why certain policies succeed while others fail, or examining interactions between stakeholders in policy development, we likely have an experienced supervisor to guide your work.

The School of Health and Social Care fosters a multidisciplinary environment renowned for both research and education.
A key strength of our School is that numerous faculty members collaborate with NHS Trusts and local organizations, keeping us attuned to current connections between academic study, pressing societal issues, and practical applications.
We maintain specialized research groups in Professional Practice Development and Applied Health Research, and serve as the home for the NIHR Research Design Service in the East of England region.

Qualification Requirements

You will need a Masters degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline such as a health science or a social science. Alternatively you will need to evidence advanced research skills developed through an alternative route. A well developed research proposal is also essential.


Official transcript(s), in English or a certified translation of your academic results to date, showing marks or grades, must be provided at the time you make your application. (Transcripts are not required from current or previous University of Essex students, or from students who have previously completed a degree at Colchester Institute awarded by the University of Essex).
