Our PhD program in Human Rights and Research Methods provides supervision across all faculty specialties, covering: national implementation of international human rights norms, freedom of expression and legal frameworks, health-related rights, human rights legislation, laws governing armed conflicts, peacekeeping operations, humanitarian law, British human rights protections, and United Nations legal systems.
Alumni from our doctoral program have pursued careers in legal practice, corporate sectors, NGOs, and academic institutions - including positions within our own Essex School of Law.
Faculty members maintain prominent roles within United Nations human rights and development initiatives, both currently and historically.
We've litigated multiple landmark cases in Strasbourg that have significantly influenced European Court of Human Rights case law.
In 2010, we received the prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize honoring our contributions to advancing human rights worldwide.
Law School alumni have established careers in international organizations, governmental agencies worldwide, financial sectors, NGOs, and naturally, within legal practice and judicial systems.
