Our PhD program in Art History and Theory provides expert guidance across diverse disciplines, maintaining a strong legacy of advanced study in European art and architecture from the 1300s onward, as well as the artistic traditions of Latin America and the United States. The Essex Art History department comprises a vibrant community of scholars exploring the creation and interpretation of visual arts and architectural spaces, spanning various cultures and mediums from early modern times to contemporary works. Our faculty employs multiple methodological approaches in research and instruction, united by three core principles:
Visual expressions—whether paintings, architectural spaces, medical illustrations, or body art—both arise from and influence societal and political dynamics. Essex researchers examine how artistic works, built environments, and visual media participate in establishing, challenging, and reshaping power structures. This exploration encompasses diverse subjects such as Renaissance urban designs for authoritarian rulers, the complex relationship between avant-garde movements and Fascist ideologies, and modern activist art driving social transformation. Our scholarship consistently engages with themes of creative independence, individual empowerment, resistance, and debates surrounding public spaces.
