Nurses play vital roles across diverse settings - from hospitals and private residences to medical clinics and assisted living facilities. As the most numerous professionals in healthcare and social services, they serve as the backbone of modern societal wellbeing. Our School of Health and Social Care boasts an impressive 98% employment or further education rate for graduates (Graduate Outcomes 2022), demonstrating how our BSc Nursing (Adult) program prepares students for meaningful, skilled careers.
Adult nursing involves caring for patients across the lifespan with various medical needs. This demanding profession requires exceptional communication abilities to comfort patients during challenging circumstances, along with skills to assess, strategize, deliver, and review personalized care plans. Prospective nurses must embrace responsibility for others' health while demonstrating the empathy that fosters strong therapeutic relationships.
Essex offers a modern nursing education distinct from traditional programs. Through partnerships with local healthcare providers, students gain exceptional practical experience. Our interdisciplinary approach allows for knowledge-sharing among future healthcare professionals, complemented by comprehensive academic support including specialized literacy and numeracy assistance.
We maintain a unique collaboration with our Service User Reference Group (SURG), comprising individuals with direct healthcare experiences. These patients, caregivers, and volunteers help shape our curriculum to prioritize patient-centered care. SURG members participate in admissions processes, teaching delivery, and research initiatives - providing students with invaluable perspectives on living with health challenges. This exposure not only enhances clinical expertise but also cultivates deeper empathy, compassion, and advocacy skills.
Graduates of our BSc Nursing (Adult) qualify to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as Registered Adult Nurses, enabling professional practice throughout the UK.
