Our BSc Marine Biology program (including a foundation year) is ideal if you don't currently meet the entry requirements for the standard three-year course and seek a degree that enhances your academic capabilities.
This four-year program begins with a foundation year (Year Zero) through our Essex Pathways Department, followed by three years in the School of Life Sciences. Year Zero covers three subject areas related to your chosen degree plus essential academic skills training, with optional English language support for international students. Upon completing Year Zero successfully, you'll advance to the main course.
While most of Earth's biodiversity exists beneath the ocean surface, much of it remains uncharted. From vibrant coral reefs to icy polar seas, these distinct yet interconnected marine environments form our planet's lifeblood. Our BSc Marine Biology program immerses you in this captivating underwater realm.
From your first day at Essex, you'll explore diverse marine ecosystems. Our world-class faculty will guide you through marine systems and ecology, sharing expertise in areas like reef conservation, fisheries, marine biotechnology, and microbiology. Alongside these specialized topics, you'll master essential scientific skills including data analysis, research methods, and presentation techniques - building a strong foundation for your future career.
Lectures come to life through hands-on learning in our advanced STEM Centre labs and fieldwork. Our local coastal environments serve as living laboratories where you'll study Essex's unique salt marshes and collaborate with conservation leaders like Essex Wildlife Trust and the Environment Agency. Advanced students can join international field trips (additional costs may apply) to locations including Scotland, Greece, and Indonesia's Coral Triangle - where you'll earn diving certification while conducting underwater research.
