Our four-year BA in Philosophy, Religion and Ethics (including a foundation year) is designed to help you build subject expertise while enhancing your academic abilities. The foundation year (Year Zero) provides comprehensive preparation for the subsequent three years of undergraduate study at Essex. Opting for the five-year variant allows you to spend your fourth year studying abroad.
This program begins with Year Zero, followed by three or four additional years, depending on whether you select the international study option. In Year Zero, you'll explore three discipline-specific subjects alongside a mandatory academic skills module, with extra English language support available for non-native speakers.
From day one, you'll join Essex's vibrant global community at the UK's most internationally diverse campus university.
Upon successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to finish your degree with the School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies.
This program explores philosophical inquiry with particular emphasis on religious and ethical questions, tackling profound topics such as life's purpose, the interplay between faith and rationality, arguments concerning God's existence, and moral dilemmas surrounding abortion and euthanasia.
Engage with both timeless philosophical works and contemporary debates across various traditions, developing the skills to participate in these discussions knowledgeably and critically.
Our department participates in numerous interdisciplinary research initiatives and maintains dynamic connections with fields including political science, law, sociology, psychoanalysis, and art history.
