Our BA Politics (including Foundation Year) is ideal if your current qualifications don't meet the entry requirements for our three-year social sciences programs and you're seeking a course that enhances your academic skills. Available to both UK and EU students, this four-year program begins with a Foundation Year (Year Zero) taught by our Essex Pathways Department, followed by three years in our Department of Government.

During Year Zero, you'll follow our Social Sciences Pathway, exploring subjects like Analyzing the Social and Political World and People and Society. Successful completion of Year Zero allows students to choose their progression path, with options including BA Politics, BA Sociology, or BA Social Sciences, among others.

From Year One of BA Politics, you'll examine key topics such as: Political science fundamentals (state, laws, conflicts, and political parties), International relations, Democratic governance, Structures of political power, and Concepts of obligations, freedoms, rights, and equality.

Our Department of Government ranks among Europe's most distinguished, renowned for its exceptional teaching and research output. We hold 6th place in the UK for research strength in politics and international studies (Times Higher Education research power metric, Research Excellence Framework 2021).

Examples of the above tariff may include:

We welcome applications from mature students (over 21) and students with non-traditional academic backgrounds (might not have gone on from school to take level 3 qualifications). We will consider your educational and employment history, along with your personal statement and reference, to gain a rounded view of your suitability for the course.
